Regional Meeting
6PM at Mt Vernon Royal Fork |
Can you believe the
great weather we have been having this year? It sure seems
that the bees are taking advantage of it as two hives I started with
packages this year already have 4 supers of honey sitting on them
and this includes drawing comb for half of them. I hope
everyone is keeping up with supering to manage your swarms.
I've received several calls already this year from folks who have
had swarms and looked up NWDBA on the Internet. So far I've
been handling this by referring them to a person or two who live
relatively close to them and mentioning that the BeezNeez usually
keeps a swarm call list. Check out the email note (at right) I
got about a swarm captured by Jim Ullman this weekend. |

Don't forget the NWDBA Picnic is July
16th. It looks like I'll be there this year although I'll miss the
July 11th meeting as I'll be volunteering at the Fire Mountain boy scout
camp this week. Thanks again to Cindy for putting together some
notes about the June meeting. I expect I'll be looking to her
again for the July minutes...
Next Meeting: Tuesday July 11, 2006
The July meeting will be an open
forum on beekeeping. We'll also hear from those who attended the
WSU Pullman Field Day and probably more fair planning/discussion.
June Meeting
Connie has found a good source for our educational booth banner with
the cost at approx. $96.00.
Tim gave an excellent talk regarding swarm season. He covered
aspects of recognizing swarm signs in the hive, methods for
prevention and some ideas for catching swarms.
Lindzy and Marcy Johnson gave an update on the silent auction
donations that are coming in, this looks to be a very fun auction!
There was discussion about the assoc. becoming a 501c non-profit
organization. Brad Boardman will be checking into this and
reporting back at a future meeting.
Lindsey Person is donating a logo design to the silent auction!
Scott Jenrich has agreed to lead the group to care for the five
hives as part of the research apiary up at the WSU Mt.Vernon site.
We voted to approve a draft proposal with an amendment regarding our
mission and sales of honey at the ESF.
Oh, also, Tim mentioned that the WSU field day is now on August 26
in Puyallup.

July 16th Picnic
We will have our annual picnic on Sunday July 16th at
at the Flowing Lake
County Park starting at high noon for setup with dinner by 1:00-1:30.
We have the site reserved all afternoon to dusk so bring the kids and
sunscreen.
This will be a potluck so pick one of main
dish, salad, or desert and extra to share. The club will provide a
variety of soda as well as plates and eating utensils. We will
also feature an auction so bring something to donate to the cause. For those
of you with web access,
to get a map. This is a county park so
you'll have to pay $5 to park.
Swarm Captured by Jim Ullman
| My 10 year old son Ryan is crazy about bees and wasp. We
visit your exhibit every year at the fair. You could not imagine how excited
he was this afternoon around 1 PM when he spotted a swarm of bees next to
our property! I initially thought he had spotted a wasp next so I
didn't immediately check it out. After a couple of hours I went out with him
to examine to situation and was amazed to see an actual bee swarm. We have
lived here 15 years and had never seen one. |

I came back into the house and jumped on the internet and
found your web site. My first contact was Fred Gower who got me in contact
with Glenn Engel who got me in contact with Jim Ullman. Jim came out and I
took pictures as he captured the bees. Jim is now the Bee Master around our
house! Thanks!

July Beekeeping
If
brood nest crowding occurs consider adding another brood
nest (western). Only remove combs of honey when they are 2/3
capped (nectar won’t shake from combs). Early morning or evenings
are the best times for removing comb to discourage robbing.
Note: Do not use brood nest combs in the
honey supers to prevent contaminating honey with miticide residues. Identify
brood nest combs and boxes (westerns and deeps) with colored paint so that combs
are not interchanged.
August
Beekeeping
In mid-August remove and store any surplus honey that is at
least two thirds capped over in a warm bee-proof, ant-proof place. To do so,
take off the honey supers early in the morning or in the evening so as to
prevent robbing of the hive by other colonies of bees. Treat all hives for 45
days with Apistan strips and treated with medicated patties and Fumidil-B as
needed.
