The Northwest District Beekeepers Association’s annual picnic is happening on July 15th. It starts at 11:00AM (but you are welcome to come early and help with setup). In the past few years we have had 100+ people show up for the picnic, and it is a great family event. The picnic is only open to current club members and their families.
Lunch will be from 11:30-1:30 PM, with the club supplying hamburgers, hot dogs, condiments, iced tea, lemonade, utensils, and plates. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish to serve 6-8 people. If other beverages are desired please bring them (alcoholic beverages are permitted, and I will personally be buying a keg of beer (probably a light IPA or pilsner) to have on hand in our kegerator – there will be a donation box for the beer for those who choose to support this endeavor). Also, if you want to bring something else to throw on the grill you are welcome to do that as well.
Near the end of lunch we will have a prize giveaway with an amazing list of prizes donated by Snohomish Bee Company. It will include an assembled nuc, a smoker, veil jacket, hive tool, Snohomish Bee Company t-shirt, a club mug, and a few other things.
From 1:30-3:00 PM we will have a hiveside chat demonstrating how to go through a hive and what to look for. In the past this has been really useful for both new beekeepers and even those more experienced.
From 3:00- 5:30 PM we will have demonstrations/workshops on mead making, how to make whipped (creamed) honey, making cut comb honey, wax handling and candle making, how to mark queens, how to apply extra wax to plastic foundation, and a demonstration of grafting to make new queens. Some of these mini workshops may be worked into the time while people are eating.
You are also welcome to check out the Polestar Apiary and look at how I have my trap hives set up. I will have one trap hive down where people can look at it and see how I typically set them up, and we will have the club extracting equipment on hand for people to look at and learn how to use.
People are encouraged to stay beyond 5:30. We will again have a firepit to gather around and our member Jim Badders has volunteered to have his classic rock band come and play, so we will definitely have music to enjoy. This year we will try to get the music and fire pit going around 4PM, and it will last until people decide it’s time to go. We will also try to have enough food for people who decide to stay late.

Be aware that the farm is a working horse training facility, and parents will need to keep an eye on their kids to keep them safe. Also, please do not bring dogs. There will be horse activity going on with our regular clients, and people are welcome to watch riders but please be respectful of them and their horses. Finally, be aware that this is a club event limited to club members and their families – yet another reason to join our wonderful and growing club!
